It's Called Fiction for a Reason

I think when politicians resort to reading or referring to works of fiction by their opponents in order to smear them, they're simply getting desperate. But it does bring up an interesting issue. If you think you might ever want to run for office, should you not write fiction or if so, be very, very careful with what you write? Because there will always be idiots out there who might try to use it against you. Still, it does seem to indicate the opponent doesn't have much else if anything to use against him/her and maybe voters will have some sense about the whole mess and ignore the spurious attempt to discredit someone.
